A fire completely destroys a farm house in Sabeto

To date, Fijian police have recorded 60 cases of structural fires from January 1 to August 9, 2021.

A farm house owned by a 39-year-old woman was completely destroyed in a fire that reportedly spread from a nearby sugarcane field yesterday morning.

The incident happened in Naboutini, Sabeto.

The estimated cost of the damage is approximately $ 7,000.

Investigations are continuing.

In a separate incident, a house in Mangu Maharaj Place, Kinoya, was partially destroyed in a fire before noon today.

The occupants managed to escape unscathed.

Joint investigations with the National Fire Authority are continuing.

To date, Fijian police have recorded 60 cases of structural fires from January 1 to August 9, 2021.

Of the 60 cases, 9 were cleared as arson, attempted arson or suspected arson.

Fire statistics for 2019 to 2021 for the period January 1 to August 9 recorded an average of 6 to 10 reported fires each month.

The majority of fires reported to date have been due to power outages or unattended fire hazards.

As past and current trends show, the majority of fires could have been prevented.

We urge Fijians to be aware of the fire hazards in and around their homes.

If you plan to leave your homes vacant, please take the time to check and recheck for fire hazards and turn off any unused electrical appliances.

When you are at home, please continue to check all potential fire hazards as accidents can and do happen.
