Nature inspires engineering: the shape of the new igubal pillow block bearings is based on the design of a shaft. The flattened spokes ensure maximum resistance against mechanical stress, like the base of a tree. Thanks to this bionic shape, these lubrication and maintenance-free high performance plastic bearings are a real alternative to conventional cast iron bearings.

Whether used to deflect the rollers of conveyor belts in a cement plant or in the tilting mechanisms of trailers on the farm, cast housing bearings with metal ball bearings ultimately reach their limits in dusty, wet and dirty environments. . Heavy contamination and lack of lubrication are responsible for 80% of premature bearing failures in these applications. And there is a constant risk of metal corrosion, all good reasons to replace ball bearings with high performance plastic lubricant-free bearing inserts. The igubal polymer pillow block bearings, available in the standard sizes of 20, 25 and 30 mm, allow quick and individual replacement. Two and four hole flange stops are also available in 20, 30 and 40mm sizes.

igus engineers pursue two strategies to ensure that plastic pillow block bearings are robust enough for industrial applications.

First, they use fibers and fillers that reinforce igubal plastic so that it can withstand high surface pressures and edge loads even under continuous loads. Second, design engineers are guided by a pattern of nature: the tree root connection, which can be found between the branches and the trunk or where the tree trunk is firmly rooted in the ground. . This design is considered particularly efficient and robust. The designers have optimized the shape of the case supports (collars) and removed the constant radii which distribute the forces more evenly, making the igubal case bearings very strong.

Thanks to their chemical resistance, corrosion resistance and insensitivity to dirt, bearing inserts made of iglidur J tribopolymer material already achieve a significantly longer service life than conventional metal bearings in many customer applications. In addition, the absence of lubricant reduces maintenance and cleaning efforts and improves environmental protection. There are no lubricants anywhere in the system that could leak into the environment or the product.

These new high-performance ball and flange bearings are not the only products for which igus is expanding its igubal range.

New to the range are three bearing inserts for imperial measurements, now available in 1, 1.5 and 2 inch (25.4mm, 38.1mm and 50.8mm) inside diameters. The price of the FDA-compliant iglidur A350 plain bearing will also drop by around 50% in the future. How? ‘Or’ What? Because igus no longer manufactures the bearing exclusively by turning from semi-finished products, but now also uses more economical and mass-produced injection molding.
