German energy company RWE Renewables has chosen British marine consultancy and survey company ABPmer to help design the Awel y Môr offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.
As part of the contract, ABPmer is assessing the sediment mobility and scour potential of the wind farm site, located off the North Wales coast.
The assessment is intended to help select the cable route, inform the export network/cable design process, and provide information on the wind turbine foundation at the site.
Heidi Roberts, ABPmer Project Manager, said: “Drawing on our local knowledge of Awel y Môr and adjacent wind farms, as well as our expertise in offshore wind farms in the UK, our specialists carry out a detailed statistical analysis, modeling and interpretation of oceanographic and geophysical data.
“Our seabed mobility hazard mapping tools help RWE understand current and future bedform migration, providing vital information in support of cable route selection and design.”
Using information from its SEASTATES Metocean database, ABPmer plans to map the behavioral characteristics of the seabed at the wind farm site and export cable corridor.
It will analyze oceanographic data from its database and use seabed surveys and geophysical data specifically collected for the project.
ABPmer will also use hydrodynamic and sediment transport modeling to map details of long-term sediment transport pathways on a regional scale.
To support the landfall selection and design process, the company will also focus on Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis of coastal data to investigate the potential for coastal erosion and vertical sea level change. landing beaches during the life of the project.
Design work for the Awel y Môr offshore wind farm will take place throughout this year, with the wind power plant expected to be commissioned by 2030.
In September last year, the Scottish Government selected ABPmer to produce an offshore wind plan for new projects aimed at decarbonising Scotland’s oil and gas industries.
